The Morning Journal (Lorain, OH)

GOLFER OF THE YEAR

- — Jon Behm

Paighton Masterson Avon Lake, senior

The standard-bearer for The Morning Journal area finished her high school career with her best season. Masterson qualified for the state tournament and made the most of her first time at state, shooting a 158 to place 23rd. And while that may have been how she ended her career prior to heading to Cincinnati, it was the journey to that point during which she showed how dominant she was. Masterson claimed medalist honors at virtually every tournament she entered: Medina Tournament, SWC Preview, SWC Championship, Edison Invitational, Blue Streaks Invitational.

COACH OF THE YEAR Krystine Frisch Avon Lake

Frisch has often said she wished she could have this year’s senior class on a five-year plan because of how important they have been to the growth of the Shoregals program. The truth, though, is that Frisch is just as important a piece as every one of the golfers she coaches. Yes, there is an undeniable talent possessed by the Avon Lake squad. However, you don’t go undefeated in conference duals, claim the Southwestern Conference preview and championship and qualify as a team for district without a great coach gently leading the way. Frisch is that coach. She adjusts what needs adjusting and sets her team up for success match in and match out. And, while the Shoregals are losing an insane amount of talent to graduation this year, Avon Lake will be just fine with Frisch at the helm.
