SWAT standoff leads to fatal shooting after alleged menace

Huron County man, 62, dies

A Nov. 25 standoff in Camden Township led to the Lorain County SWAT team fatally shooting a Huron County man.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office was advised by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office at 4:10 p.m. to be on the lookout for a suicidal male, according to a news release.

The victim was identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Daniel Calala, 62, of the New London area.

Calala was last seen operating a bronze vehicle in the area of state Route 303 and state Route 511 in Camden Township, according to the release.

A vehicle matching the descriptio­n was located behind the Camden Township Complex, 50679 Route 303.

Deputies began talking with the man who brandished two firearms.

One was a handgun and the other a long gun, the release said.

Deputies took cover and began negotiatin­g. The man threatened to shoot the deputies, according to the release.

The County SWAT team, LifeCare ambulance and Camden Fire Department also responded to the area.

Calala refused to surrender and drove west on Route 303 for about a mile.

He then turned his vehicle around and drove toward deputies who were following from a distance, the release said.

Calala stopped and negotiatio­ns resumed, according to the release.

He then made movements that were a threat to deputies and a SWAT team member fired, the release said.

Calala was deceased at the scene, according to the release.

The Lorain Police Department and Lorain County Coroner’s Office arrived to assist.

Lorain police will lead the continued investigat­ion of the incident, according to the release.
