Sheffield Lake woman sentenced for crash

A 25-year-old Sheffield Lake woman was sentenced to three years of community control Nov. 26 for a February crash into a house.

Caitlynn R. Kelling also must enroll into Lorain County Drug Court in connection to the Feb. 25 crash and her license were suspended for two years.

Kelling pleaded guilty Sept. 18 to an amended indictment of vehicular assault, two counts of possession of drugs and single counts of OVI and possessing drug abuse instruments.

The 61-year-old victim was present at the sentencing and said she wanted Kelling to go into treatment rather than into prison, court officials said.

A Sheffield Lake police report on the crash indicated Kelling drove her red Ford Focus through the stop sign at Ferndale Avenue and Harris Road at about 40 mile per hour then struck two vehicles in the driveway of 791 Harris Road.

The car then traveled into the house’s garage, pinning the victim between her car and a refrigerator, the report said.

When officers arrived on scene, Kelling was slumped over unconscious, according to the report.

She was removed from the car using hydraulic jaws, revived with two doses of naloxone and then transported to Avon University Hospitals, 1997 Healthway Drive, the report said.

Kelling later was flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Officers discovered a syringe, burnt spoon and a white powder in Kelling’s purse and two clonazepam pills in a medicine bottle, the report said.

Clonazepam is a schedule IV controlled substance used to treat seizures, panic disorder and anxiety.

A blood test later showed Kelling had para-fluoroisobutyrlfentanyl, a synthetic opioid sold as a designer drug, in her system at the time of the crash, the report said.
