A 64-year-old woman fired shots at an alleged robbery suspect, causing him to run away from an Elyria home.

The Elyria man is facing felony charges after he allegedly tried to rob an Elyria family at gunpoint Nov. 25, according to police.

Mark A. Ryder, 51, was charged with aggravated robbery, a firstdegree felony; having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; and using weapons while intoxicated, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to an Elyria police report.

An officer on patrol heard what sounded like three gunshots at 11:38 p.m. in the area of Foster Avenue between Lake and Woodland avenues, the report said.

The officer noticed three people in the 900 block of Foster who said a white male wearing a hoodie and blue jeans attempted to rob them with a handgun, according to the report.

One of the victims, a 64-year-old woman, fired a few shots with her .38-caliber revolver, missing the suspect, but causing him to run west on Foster toward Woodland, the report said.

The officer set up a perimeter two blocks from the suspect’s last location and a K-9 Unit also was deployed, the report said.

Ryder, who matched the description of the suspect, was located in the 300 block of Woodland behind two large bushes and arrested without incident.

Ryder initially told police he did not have a gun, but officers located a black Hi-Point C9 9 mm semiautomatic handgun in the bushes near where officers found him, the report said.

The victims identified him as the attempted robber, according to the report.

It was determined Ryder did not fire his weapon, according to the report.

Court and bond information was not available at the time of this report.
