The Elyria Public Library System South Branch, 1611 Middle Ave., hosted an event Nov. 27 to introduce engineering basics to students.

“The event is called ‘Tech Time Extreme Engineering,’ and it’s part of a larger series we do,” said Julie Farr, librarian at the branch. “We have one of these events each month where kids can come over after school around 4 p.m. or so and build something.”

Farr said the library always is trying to promote learning.

“Sometimes kids need to switch things up, and this is a bit more hands-on,” she said. “It follows the science technology engineering and math (STEM) guidelines. It’s about problem solving and learning from experience.”

“It’s the actual building of something, and I think that is where the kids find excitement in it.” — Julie Farr, librarian at the Elyria Public Library’s South Branch

Farr said the branch currently is focusing in on engineering.

“It’s the actual building of something, and I think that is where the kids find excitement in it,” she said. “They like to see how high something can go compared to what a peer might be able to do.

“Today, we will be making a ping-pong ball roller coaster out of straws. So, I’m sure they will be excited about that.”

Farr said the participants learn as they go.

“You find out how to best build something and create a good foundation,” she said. “Building something as high as you can is not always the best option.

“You might find a wider, stronger base is what should be prioritized over height or style. It is definitely a cause and effect in that regard. They try something and learn it might not be the best way to go about it.”

Farr said there is different material for the youngsters at the library each month.

“We rotate supplies amongst the different branches in the system,” she said. “We can also request different things for kids if they want something new.

“It’s about giving them the ability to make certain things and providing them a way to learn when they get out of the classroom.”

The branch’s next event is a “Holiday Helpers” cookie decorating event starting at 4 p.m., Dec. 6, for those who are interested.
