Police smash window in traffic stop

- Staff report

Elyria police had to break a car window to arrest a man who refused to identify himself during a Nov. 27 traffic stop, according to an Elyria police report.

Damien R. Crawley, 38, of Frances Boulevard in Elyria, was charged with failure to comply with a police order, failure to disclose personal information, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing official business, the report said.

About 8:20 p.m., an officer saw a tan Chevrolet sedan traveling south on Lorain Boulevard.

Its license plate was covered with snow and the driver did not use a turn signal when the car turned left onto Bell Avenue, according to the report.

When the officer stopped the car, the man later identified as Crawley, stated he was traveling, not driving, although he was seated directly behind the car steering wheel, the report said.

More officers and a sergeant arrived at the scene and also detected an odor of marijuana coming from the car, according to the report.

The sergeant advised officers to break the driver’s side window with a police baton.

Officers then dragged Crawley from the car and took him into custody, the report said.

Crawley suffered two small cuts near his left eyebrow from the broken glass; LifeCare medics treated him at the scene, the report said.

He also had outstanding warrants through the Amherst Police Department and Erie County Sheriff’s Office, according to the police report.

Police transported Crawley to the Lorain County Jail where he received a $3,750 bond, according to court records

Crawley appeared Nov. 28 at Elyria Municipal Court. His next court date is Dec. 11.
