Arrest made in attempted carjacking

- Staff report

Elyria police arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with a Dec. 12 attempted carjacking, according to a news release.

Johnny G. Mack III, of Elyria, was arrested at 9:40 a.m., Dec. 14. in the parking lot of 303 Chestnut Commons Drive in Elyria.

Mack is charged with single felony counts of aggravated robbery and breaking and entering.

Police said Mack attempted to carjack a 33-year-old woman in the parking lot of Speedway, 990 Broad St.

Mack admitted his involvement in the incident to police, according to the release.

Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino said the victim was attempting to get into her vehicle when she was approached by a white male with thinning hair and glasses, asking her where an address was on South Abbe Road.

She told him he should use a GPS.

The suspect said he didn’t have one, so the woman opened up her vehicle and offered to look up the address on her GPS, Costantino said.

She told police she didn’t feel good about the man, so she took a pocket knife from the car’s center console and concealed it under her leg.

The male attempted to get in her car and she yelled for him to get out, then he produced a knife, Costantino said.

A struggle ensued, but the woman used her knee to hit her vehicle’s horn which caused people in the area to respond to the incident. The suspect fled on foot. The victim suffered superficial injuries and did not require treatment at the scene, Costantino said.

Mack also admitted his involvement in the Dec. 10 break-in of management offices at 630 S. Abbe Road where numerous computer monitors and keyboards were taken, the release said.

He was lodged at the Lorain County Jail without bond pending a court hearing.
