Suspect in ferret theft charged

- — Staff report

The female suspect involved in the Dec. 18 ferret theft in Elyria has been apprehended, police said.

The 18-year-old Lorain woman was charged with theft, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

The male suspect, a 24-year-old Elyria man, still is at-large.

Officers responded to Best In Pets, 233 Abbe Road, for the theft that took place at 1 p.m., according to an Elyria police report.

The store manager said a black female, with curly black hair, a pink shirt and a black jacket, along with a black male, with short hair and a red shirt with a skull on it, walked around the store for a couple of minutes before arriving in the ferret section.

The male then grabbed a tan-colored ferret, valued at $150, and placed it in the woman’s purse, the report said.

The two then walked around the store for an additional five minutes before leaving in a silver vehicle, possibly a fourdoor Buick Regal.

The woman has been released on a summons to appear Dec. 26 in Elyria Municipal Court.

“We are still looking for the male, but we encourage him to turn himself in,” Costantino said. “I’d like to thank citizens who came forward with information in this case. The ferret was found, returned to the pet store and is in good health.
