Foundation awards $1 million in grants
The Community Foundation of Lorain County has reached a $1 million milestone with its most recent round of grants for community and social service programs.
On Dec. 19, the Foundation board of directors approved the awards to 51 organizations, according to a news release.
“We are so pleased that we can distribute these much-needed funds to so many organizations providing important services in the county,” said board Chairwoman Farnaz Ansari Berna. “We are always grateful for our donors’ generosity and confidence, but even more so at this season of giving and reflection.”
The awards ranged in size from $1,500 to $75,000 including grant support to expand residential treatment services for women through The Key at The LCADA Way and to support for frail seniors through Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services and the Lorain County Office on Aging.
The Foundation will help pay for emergency needs through the Salvation Army in Elyria and Wellington, supporting City Fresh partnerships with Lorain Public Library System and Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority, and care for animals at Friendship Animal Protective League.
Awards also were made to RePlay for Kids, which trains students and volunteers to repair and modify toys and assistive devices for children with disabilities.
Grants also went to new organizations such as Passages Inc., which works with formerly incarcerated fathers on reunification, workforce development life skills and self-sufficiency.
The application deadline for the 2019 grant awards is Feb. 1, 2019.
A training workshop is being offered Jan. 11, 2019, at the Elyria Public Library System, West River Branch, 1194 W. River Road.
The training workshop is free and open to the public.
