Over the past three decades, Debbie Dixon, owner of Your Deli, 395 Park Ave. in Amherst, said the loyalty of local residents has kept her business alive for as long as its doors have been open.

Dixon said Dec. 13 officially marked the restaurant’s 30 years of business in Amherst and they celebrated on Dec. 14 with cake.

“I just want to thank the people,” Dixon said. “The people have been so loyal to me.”

Your Deli’s current location on Park Avenue is the third since opening and has provided the first space where all of the restaurant’s services are under one roof.

The building had been gutted and designed to provide a sit-in restaurant and commercial kitchen in the back, Dixon said.

“I didn’t realize how hard it was (to work at several locations) until I got there and had everything in one spot,” she said.

Now, Dixon’s son Zack, who used to run the cash register when he was 12 or 13, is head of the kitchen, a position Dixon held for 10 years.

“His hand touches every container and that used to be me 10 years ago,” she said. “I was doing that. Now I’m just thankful I’ve been able to fill the business with something that he can take over.”

One of the many products made in the commercial kitchen is Your Deli’s popular chicken paprikash, which is sold in almost 100 different Heinens, Discount Drug Marts, IGAs, Apples and ACMEs stores.

Your Deli also sells over 20 different varieties of sandwiches and various homemade soups.

Dixon said that both the loyalty of the town and former employees have kept the restaurant successful for so long.

“I have people now that bring their kids in that used to come in with their parents,” she said.

“This was a lot of first jobs for people,” Dixon said. “One of our employees is now a doctor and comes in for lunch. It’s just kind of neat to see how things change.”
