A 41-year-old Lorain man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly threatening and assaulting police officers Jan. 10 while at an Elyria McDonald’s.
Jose A. Veliz was charged with assaulting a police officer and three counts of intimidation, both thirddegree felonies, resisting arrest, a first-degree misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct while intoxicated, a minor misdemeanor, according to an Elyria police report.
Officers responded at 9:33 p.m. to McDonalds, 595 Broad St., for a man who was threatening employees inside the restaurant.
Officers found Veliz, who they learned was released from prison at 6:30 p.m. earlier that day, on the south side of the building, the report said.
He told officers that he didn’t care if he was sent to prison and then he threatened the officers and their families.
Officers applied handcuffs to Veliz, and he looked right at an officer and made the same threat again, according to the report.
Veliz then started to pull away and swung violently in an attempt to get away from officers, the report said.
Veliz then pushed back into an officer causing him and three officers to fall to the ground.
During the fall, one of the officers hit his head and back on a handrail, the report said.
Officers were able to get Veliz off the ground and to a patrol car.
On the way to Lorain County Jail, Veliz again threatened officers, the report said.
This time, however, an officer recorded Veliz making the threat, according to the report.
Veliz also injured himself by hitting his head on the vehicle’s rear cage.
He was treated at UH Elyria and taken to the jail.
Veliz, who is being held at Lorain County Jail, has an arraignment scheduled for 8:55 a.m. Jan. 14 at Elyria Municipal Court.
