Pair facing charges in 2 assault, robbery incidents
Two men are accused of two separate assault and robbery incidents in Elyria within one hour of each other Feb. 4, according to a police report. Elyria police are investigating the alleged armed assault and robbery of a 17-year-old girl in the 100 block of Cleveland Street and an attempted home invasion in the 200 block of Columbus Street. Daniel J. Kelly III, 18, of Lorain, was charged with felony counts of aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence and a misdemeanor count of assault. Ali R. Thompson, 20, of Elyria, was charged with felony counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, tampering with evidence. Both suspects are in the Lorain County Jail and are scheduled to appear before Elyria Municipal Court Judge Gary C. Bennett on Feb. 12. At 6:17 p.m., officers were called to the parking lot of Walgreen’s, 100 Cleveland St., for a possible assault. The 17-year-old female victim told police she was inside her vehicle when she was approached by two men who demanded she give them $50, according to the report. She refused and a suspect identified as Kelly stated she give them “everything you’ve got” while brandishing a knife, the report said. The victim told police a second suspect identified as Thompson punched her in her ear. In the process, she was able to grab her car keys and began swinging and kicking at the suspects, allowing her to leave the area in her car, the report said. Kelly and Thompson also were identified as suspects in a second incident at 6:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Columbus Street. Police were called to the scene for a burglary in progress involving two suspects armed with knives attempting to enter through the rear door of the residence. An occupant told police he opened the door after instructing the men to leave several times, the report said. Thompson “took a swipe” at the occupant’s right arm and missed, it said. The occupant shut the door before the suspects could enter, the report said. Two men matching the descriptions of the suspects were taken into custody in the area of Ohio and St. Clair streets.
