“...it has been a busy but exciting time today.” — Kerri Broome, executive director

The Lorain County Historical Society packed the rooms Feb. 9 of the Hickories Museum, 509 Washington Ave. in Elyria, with women enjoying tea, sandwiches, scones and desert during the society’s 20th Anniversary Valentine Tea. “It has been a big event for the society for two decades now, and it has been a busy but exciting time today,” said Kerri Broome, executive director of the society. “We have four different seatings this weekend and they total around 300 people, so the house has been filled.” Broome said the 20-year anniversary of the event adds something special this year. “It represents how long it has been going on and how many times people have come here to

support the Lorain County Historical Society, enjoy some tea and learn about history,” she said. “The theme this year is focusing on the different gatherings that have happened here over time. The home was occupied by the Garford family in the early 1900s and was used for many gatherings throughout the years. The program touches on life then and throughout.” Broome said there is definitely an allure to the event that keeps people coming back.

“First off, the volunteers do a great job helping us set things up and get the food ready,” she said. “We couldn’t do it without them. People also love how delicious the food is. There is also something about this place that really captures a time period and creates a beautiful setting.” Broome said the event helps to support the organization. “It’s one of out major fundraisers, and we are thankful to all who took interest and showed up,” she said. “It has turned out to be another successful year.” Karen Palm, of Oberlin, said she was having a great time. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “I get learn more about history and enjoy some time with friends.” Mickey Becher, of Wakeman, said the setting is special. “It’s really neat having tea in this house,” she said. “They have done a great job of getting the place ready for the event and everyone is having such a good time.”
