Matthew Gross will conclude his tenure as CEO of the Fisher-Titus Health system March 1, according to Dennis Doughty, chairman of the Fisher-Titus Health Board of Directors. While serving as board chairman, Gross was appointed to the CEO role in December 2017 to ensure a stable changeover to new leadership following Lorna Stayer’s retirement as the health system’s top executive, Doughty said. Gross resigned his chairman position to work full time as CEO. “As CEO, Matt has provided valuable leadership during this period of transition,” Doughty said. “Over the last 15 months, he has initiated organizational changes and implemented the fiscal business disciplines that have positioned Fisher-Titus to remain a successful independent community health system well into the future.” Dr. Brent W. Burkey, who was named president of Fisher-Titus Medical Center in March 2018, will replace Gross. Burkey now will become president/CEO of Fisher-Titus Health, Doughty said. Prior to joining Fisher-Titus, Burkey held numerous leadership positions across a variety of disciplines including clinical, information technology and operations during his 14-year tenure with Cleveland Clinic. “I leave my duties in the very capable hands of Dr. Burkey, who will now serve in the combined role of president/CEO for our health system,” Gross said. “Brent has spent the past 11 months working with our clinical and medical staff, while at the same time, developing a keen understanding of our community’s health care needs and helping to establish our strategic direction for the future.” Gross’s decision came with mixed emotions. “While I am looking forward to getting back to my retirement, I will very much miss the interaction with the 1,200-plus employees and medical staff that make Fisher-Titus the special place that it is,” he said.
