Edgerly, Johnston honored in Rockets win
Bay wins senior night against Rocky River, senior scores 1,000th point
In basketball, team over individual is always preached.
But on Feb. 13, the night belonged to a pair of Bay Rocket seniors — Madelynn Edgerly and Maeve Johnston.
Both were honored on senior night at home against Rocky River in a 55-32 victory.
Edgerly scored a gamehigh 26 points, including her 1,000th career point on a layup with 5:16 in the first quarter.
Johnston added 10 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
It’s almost never about individuals, but on this night it was.
“We go as they go,” said first-year Bay coach John Curran. “They are our leaders in practice and in games and I couldn’t have asked for two better seniors to come in with.”
A stoppage occurred when Edgerly scored the 1,000th point, drawing an applause from the crowd and hugs from her teammates.
“These past four years have meant so much in my life,” Edgerly said. “It meant a lot to get honored and my teammates made it fun. It’s crazy because when you get close to 1,000 points, you definitely know you’re approaching it. And to do it on senior night meant a lot. It’s surreal.”
After the game, teammates Barbara Aldridge and Caroline Fowles spoke in front of the crowd to Edgerly and Johnston on how much they meant to them.
“I’ve been with a lot of these girls since the beginning,” Johnston said. “And to get to this point almost at the end, it feels good but also sad because we’re going
to miss everything. But I’m super excited because a person I’ve grown up with got a thousand points and that’s probably my greatest accomplishment is being able to grow with her.”
Bay’s defense was strong throughout and held a 25-14 halftime lead.
Edgerly scored 10 of her 26 points in the third, but Rocky River hung around trailing only by 9 going into the fourth.
But Bay scored the first six points of the quarter going up, 46-31, and the Pirates only scored one point in the quarter.
The Rockets improve to 16-5 overall.
“I really think we’ve gained some momentum,” Edgerly said. “We’ve been moving the ball a lot better and I hope that can continue.”
