Repairs to the bridge that crosses over Milan Avenue and Cooper Foster Park Road construction are now underway in Amherst. “There is some construction going around town that might tamper some of your travel, but we’re doing our best to keep travel moving along,” Mayor Mark Costilow said during a Feb. 11 City Council meeting. One of these projects includes replacing abutments at the ends of the bridge that will take three months to complete, Costilow said. “The railroad is doing some work there,” he said. “Mostly, it’s going to be improving concrete abutments on both sides. “But all that concrete that’s falling down, they’re going to improve that and repair those.” Costilow said the contractor working on the project is aware that the road is commonly busy with pedestrian traffic. “I have talked to the contractor and they’ve assured us they’re going to keep all traffic going at all times, and they’re going to keep it safe for pedestrian traffic,” he said. “We know that’s an important path for people for walking to the schools, so they’ve assured us that they are well aware of that.” Traffic flow will be maintained for the duration of the project. Costilow also said the repaving and expansion of Cooper Foster Park Road had begun and so far is making good progress. “If you go down that way (east on Cooper Foster Park Road), there’ll be some stoplights set up along the path in a certain area where they’re actually doing the construction,” he said. “It really does seem to be moving along fairly well, so they’re doing a good job.”
