Westshore Watercolor gathers for love of painting
Members of the Westshore Watercolor Society met Feb. 21 at Avon Lake Public Library, 32649 Electric Blvd., to enjoy some time painting and learning different techniques to perfect their craft. “We are a group that was formed around 15 years ago or so due to the love of painting,” said Fred Bangeman, 77, of Avon Lake and president of the Westshore Watercolor Society. Bangeman said the group, which is not accepting any new members, is comprised of intermediate to skilled artists. “All group members are good artists,” he said. “Each session that we have here at the library, Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m., is run by an instructor. “Some of them are in the group, and we have a rotation every six weeks. It keeps it interesting as the class shifts gears a few times each year when a new instructor takes over.” Bangeman said he decided to join the group when he was looking for a new hobby. He said he travels the world and has seen many things. “I’ve taken photographs of what I have seen during in my travels,” Bangeman said. “It’s something where I like to take the photo and use it as inspiration for my paintings. “The painting may be slightly different. I make them my own, but it is a good way to combine the two. It’s very relaxing to paint, and I love being able to interact with members of the group.” Sandy Morse, 50, of Brownhelm Township, said she looks forward to the group’s gatherings. “It’s great to be in a group with such like-minded people,” Morse said. “Our love of painting allows us to come together and have a good time on a regular basis. “It’s nice to come back and take away a new technique or way of attempting a certain painting.”
