First day of district tournament results

Fuad Shalhout paints a picture of pins and everything else that happened for Norwalk after the first day of the wrestling district tournament on March 1.

At the Division II Norwalk District on March 1, a few area individual­s will compete in the key semifinal matches on March 2.

Bay senior Matt Cover (195) went 2- 0, pinning Galion’s Noah Grochowals­ki in 1 minute, 49 seconds and pinned Bath’s Fielden Deeds in 3:33. He is set to face Sandusky’s Terion Stewart in the semifinal. His brother Mason Cover (170) went 2-0 and will face Wauseon’s Xavier Torres in the semifinal.

Firelands junior Payton Burgdorf (120) pinned Columbian’s Simon Viengmany in 32 seconds before winning a 16-1 tech fall over Clear Fork’s Isaiah Thomas.

Burgdorf is set to face Bellevue’s Noah Aida in the semifinal.

Fa i r v i e w’ s Ma t t Kaufmann (126) won a 5-1 decision over Perkins’ J.D. Thom before pinning Clyde’s James Batesole’s in 48 seconds. He will face Mansfield Senior’s Josh Lyons.

Vermilion senior Jakob Koleszar (138) pinned Bellevue’s Jared Weider in 6:50 in overtime. He then pinned Otsego’s Ian Kress in 3 minutes. Hewill face Van Wert’s Gabe Steyer in the semis.

Perkins leads after Day 1 with 61 points and Bay is 11th with 28 points as the highest local team.
