Horizon seeking volunteers for annual science, engineering fair
The 16th annual Concept Science and Engineering Fair, also known as CONSEF 2019, is April 6 and the Horizon Science Academy of Lorain community will participate. Horizon administration is encouraging parents, students, families, educators, staff, members of the community and more to serve as a volunteer judge for the concept school event, according to a news release. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Huntington Cleveland Convention Center, 300 Lakeside Ave. The CONSEF and STEM EXPO event is organized by Concept Schools, a Chicago-based, nonprofit, charter management and consulting organization, according to the CONSEF website. Horizon is one of the concept schools. The event welcomes over 600 students in grades five through 12 from across the Midwest from an array of educational backgrounds from public to private, charter and home schools, the website said. Students will compete in the fair and show their demonstrations at STEM Exposition. The mission of the Concept Science & Engineering Fair is to increase public awareness in science, math and engineering, the website said. Those with CONSEF believe that every school has the potential to shine in science, math and engineering; therefore, they encourage every student to share research/project summaries through this unique platform. Participants will be awarded according to their scores given by the judges. As a part of STEM EXPO, student demonstrations will take place to encourage them to showcase the results of their STEM studies and their science work. The purpose of the exposition is to apply knowledge and understanding of science, technology, engineering and math to conduct indepth, “real-world” investigations and offer another venue for students to practice their presentation skills, the website said. The STEM Expo also is open to all students, parents and community members to enjoy handson activities and explore the excitement and opportunities that science offers. Lastly, there will be a design contest, which is an art competition. The entries of the top 10 finalists will be displayed at CONSEF and the winning design will be printed on program booklets and T-shirts given as complimentary to the students during the fair.
