Woman pursues dream with specialty baked goods shop
A new business in Sheffield Village’s commercial center is bringing a lifelong sweet passion to life.
Classie Cakes by Yvonne, 5324 N. Abbe Road, marked its grand opening in early July bringing the artistry of specialty baked goods to Sheffield Village.
Proprietor Yvonne Chisholm has transitioned into her passion full time after working in the health care industry for 25 years.
“I have been doing cakes out of my home for the past eight years,” Chisholm said. “I specialize in designer cakes, out-of-the-box ideas that you can dream of.
“My motto is if you can dream it, then I can create it.”
Chisholm is completely self-taught and has drawn on her experience as an artist who’s had work displayed in galleries in designing her edible creations.
“I was able to take what I was able to do with my art and make it into cakes,” she said. “And I was doing it for my family and friends.
“And then it just progressed. People kept asking me to make them cakes, and then I started charging for it. And I’ve progressed.
Her new location is near Lorain County Community College and a number of other businesses with Sheffield Village Plaza.
She said she feels at home.
“The community has embraced me,” Chisolm said. “I already have a great clientele that just comes in.
“They just love it,” she said. “It’s all over Facebook, my cassata cake jars and my cassata cupcakes are my biggest sellers. Everybody’s coming in for those. So it’s been great. It’s been a really great experience.”
She thanked her family for helping her pursue the business and noted the timing worked out after recently losing her job.
“I was going to do both jobs,” Chisolm said. “I was going to open and have my mom helped me out with it.
“And it just worked out where I lost my job. And I was able to put 100 percent into this, and it’s been a blessing.”
Her new location is near Lorain County Community College and a number of other businesses with Sheffield Village Plaza.
