NFL

COWBOYS DE SUSPENDED >> Cowboys defensive end Robert Quinn has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s ban on performance enhancers.

Quinn was acquired in a trade with Miami in the offseason. The league said the ninth-year player is eligible to practice and play in preseason games, but he is out until the regular season after breaking his left hand in practice at training camp..

Golf

MERRITT LEADS >> Troy Merritt isn’t obsessed with his position in the FedEx Cup and what he needs to advance in the PGA Tour’s postseason. He figures the best solution is good golf, and he delivered his best round of the year in The Northern Trust. Merritt began with a 10-foot par save, followed with a pair of 20-foot birdie putts and took advantage of calm, rain-softened Liberty National by tying the course record with a 9-under 62 for a one-shot lead over Dustin Johnson.

WOODS STUMBLES >> Liberty National was never so susceptible to low scoring as it was, and Tiger Woods could feel it. He just couldn’t do much about it. Two hours into his opening round, Woods was eight shots behind, and the gap only got wider. When his 12-foot par putt on his final hole stayed left of the cup, Woods had a 4-over 75.

Running

RUIZ DIES >> Rosie Ruiz, the Boston Marathon coursecutter who was stripped of her victory in the 1980 race and went on to become an enduring symbol of cheating in sports, has died. She was 66. Ruiz, who was also known as Rosie Vivas, died in Florida of cancer on July 8, according to an obituary that made no mention of her Boston Marathon infamy. Running magazine first made the connection this week.
