Club announces scholarshi­p winners

The Mexican American Citizens Club awarded 15 college scholarshi­ps for the 2019-20 academic year.

These scholarshi­ps total $6,750 and are given to college students of Mexican descent, according to a news release from the Mexican American Citizens Club.

The 15 scholarshi­p recipients will be honored at 4:30 p.m., Aug. 17, during a scholarshi­p dinner at St. Anthony Church Hall, 1305 E. Erie Ave. in Lorain.

The awards ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.

A Mexican meal will be served at a cost of $10 and the money raised at this dinner will go toward the 2020 scholarshi­ps, according to the release.

This is the 27th year the Mexican American Citizens Club has awarded college scholarshi­ps.

To date, the Mexican American Citizens Club has awarded 249 college scholarshi­ps totaling $117,750., the release said.

Students receiving scholarshi­ps and schools of attendance are:

• Damacio Martinez, Franciscan University of Steubenvil­le

• Nicolas Nunez, Lorain County Community College

• Nathan Nunez, Dartmouth College

• Jonathon Lesiecki, University of Toledo

• Taylor Soto, The Ohio State University

• Carson Marks, University of Toledo

• Corina Barranco, Lorain County Community College

• Destanie Camarillo, Case Western Reserve University

• Alejandro Reyes, John Carroll University

• Daymiah Leyva, Miami University

• Haley Haas Kent, State University

•Tyler Haas, Hiram College

Alivia Ybarra, The Ohio State University

• Jessica Camarillo, Florida Institute of Technology

The Mexican American Citizens Club has been in existence since the 1950s. It meets monthly at St. Anthony Church.
