Chair of Honor to come to Avon, Avon Lake

A program to honor 80,000 MIA soldiers will be unveiled during football games in Avon and Avon Lake.

A new program to honor veterans will have an unveiling during football games in Avon and Avon Lake.

The program will involve the dedication of a fixed fusion stadium chair with the POW/MIA logo applied to the back of the chair, according to a news release.

The Chair of Honor Program which will be at the Avon vs Avon Lake football game Aug. 30, the release said.

Another Chair of Honor program will occur in Avon Lake during the Avon Lake vs Westlake football game Sept. 20, the release said.

The program is sponsored by the American Legion Riders of Post 211 Avon Lake, American Legion Avon Lake Post 211 and the VFW Post 7035 in Avon.

Crews will cordon off the chair and it will remain perpetuall­y empty to help people remember that even though “our soldiers are not here, there is still a space for them,” the release said.

There are over 80,000 missing in action soldiers, according to the release.

Currently, chairs are in place at the football stadiums at Firestone, Brookside and Amherst high schools, plus Avon’s Sprenger Stadium.

The goal is to eventually have them installed at all Lorain County high school football stadiums, the release said.

The chairs were donated by Hussey Seating Co., of North Berwick, Maine.

More than 500 of these chairs have been installed at various locations in the United States, the release said.

There are over 80,000 missing in action soldiers, according to the release.
