Tri-C enrolling adults for Encore Campus Fridays

- Staff report

The Encore Campus Fridays program at Cuyahoga Community College will begin a new session of classes Sept. 20 aimed at enriching the minds and lives of those ages 55 and older.

The fall program runs every Friday for seven weeks at three locations: Eastern Campus in Highland Hills, Western Campus in Parma and — new this year — Westshore Campus in Westlake, according to a news release.

Age-eligible students can enroll in one to six courses for a $99 fee. The 50-minute classes take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The overall course catalog features more than 100 options on a wide variety of subjects, including art, cinema, computers, history, music, religion, science, yoga and more. Classes are taught by Tri-C faculty, retired educators and subject experts, the release stated.

“Encore Campus Fridays is a great way to socialize while learning about topics you have always been interested in,” said Suzanne Ortiz, who oversees the program.

For those who want to take classes but can’t make it to Encore Campus Fridays, there is Tri-C’s Neighborhood Scholars 55+ adult education courses.

These take place at college sites as well as museums, parks and other locations around Greater Cleveland.

Neighborhood Scholars includes tours to experience restaurants, landmarks and churches; “Coffee with a Curator” sessions, which provide behind-the-scenes looks at exhibits and collections at University Circle institutions; and handson classes such as jewelry making.

These alternate-site classes occur throughout the week and vary in length. Costs range from $10 to $79 per class.

Last fall, more than 700 adult learners participated in Encore Campus Fridays at Eastern and Western campuses. Neighborhood Scholars attracted another 250 people — the program’s highest enrollment to date, the release stated.
