The Lorain County Deputies Association will hold a fundraiser picnic Sept. 7.

Deputy Adam Shaw, secretary of the union, said the annual fundraiser will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Amherst Eagles, 1161 Milan Ave. in Amherst.

Money raised will go toward the charities the union donates to, Shaw said.

“We’re trying to do Shop with a Cop this year if we can raise enough money,” he said. “We donate to a bunch of things.”

Earlier this year, the union donated dog supplies to the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office’s pet supply drive and other organizations, Shaw said.

“We’re trying to donate more, but we’ve got to raise the funds to do it,” he said.

Shaw said the annual fundraiser used to be a steak fry, but members moved to a barbecue which is easier to do.

Mission BBQ, of Parma, will cater the event, which Shaw said always is a hit with the participants.

The cost is $20 and includes food and drinks.

Tickets can be purchased from deputies, their Facebook page and there will be a limited number available at the door.

The union also will raffle police gear, car wash kits, gift cards and other items donated by local businesses, Shaw said.

“A lot of companies throughout Lorain County came through with donations for us to raffle off,” he said.

Shaw said the barbecue event raises awareness.

“We’re trying to give back to the community we serve,” he said. “The best way to do that is to hold events and get our name out there. We’re not just cops, we’re people, too.”
