Seahawks trade for Clowney

-

Two people with knowledge of the deal say the Seahawks are on the verge of acquiring pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney from the Texans. Such a move would bolster one of Seattle’s biggest needs heading into the season.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Aug. 31 because the deal is still pending a physical and had not been completed. Seattle reportedly is sending a thirdround pick and two players back to Houston.

Clowney held out from training camp with the Texans. The standout pass rusher was unhappy about Houston using the franchise tag on him and no progress on a long-term contract. The Seahawks would have Clowney for the upcoming season at a cost of about $16 million. But Seattle has the salary cap space and a huge need on its defensive line.

TEXANS TRADE FOR TUNSIL, STILLS >> The Texans continued a busy day of trades on Aug. 31 by addressing a glaring need to upgrade their offensive line by acquiring left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Dolphins in a deal which also netted them receiver Kenny Stills, a person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade had not yet been announced. Miami will receive two firstround picks, one in the second and will also get offensive tackle Julién Davenport and cornerback Johnson Bademosi in the deal.

Tennis

GAUFF ELIMINATED >> American teenager Coco Gauff’s second Grand Slam tournament has ended with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the U.S. Open. The 15-year-old Gauff has generated all sorts of attention already by making it to the second week at Wimbledon in July and becoming the youngest teen to win two matches at Flushing Meadows since 1996. But in this much-hyped match under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium against the top-seeded Osaka, Gauff often looked exactly like what she is: an immensely talented player who is still learning her way at tennis’ top level. She served at up to 119 mph but also double-faulted seven times.

College Football

GEORGIA STATE STUNS TENNESSEE >> Georgia State was the unlikeliest of candidates to produce one of the signature victories in this college football season’s opening Saturday. The Panthers never had beaten a Power Five team. The Sun Belt program was coming off a 2-10 season in which it lost its last seven games. None of that mattered Aug. 31 as Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score to help 26-point underdog Georgia State shock Tennessee 38-30 and produce one of the biggest stunners in the nearly century-long history of Neyland Stadium.
