Lorain County Community College’s Culinary program held a cooking class, Aug. 31, geared toward teaching children how to make healthy fruit snacks.

“The event is a workshop to teach kids recipes using real fruit,” said Marisa Goodman, culinary instructor at the college. “We will be going over how to make smoothies, fruit skewers, parfaits, fruit salad and watermelon cake.”

Goodman said the culinary program often holds classes for children.

“We have had other things in the past including baked goods and other items,” she said. “We had one session that focused on cupcakes, so we look at things we think kids will be able to follow and we go for it.”

Goodman said the college provides the classes for children engagement.

“It’s important to get kids involved,” she said. “We want to get them interested in cooking. It’s a passion that can start at a young age for a lot of people, and we want to encourage that. We also have plenty of classes for adults as well. We will have our ‘Master the Knife’ class for adults Sept. 14 at noon, so always check on our Facebook for events.”

Kim Lovett, 6, of Elyria, was one of the children at the event.

“I loved making the smoothie,” she said. “I put strawberry yogurt, mangoes, pineapples, oranges and ice cubes in mine. It was good and easy to make. I wanted to learn how to make smoothies because I like drinking them.”

Isabelle Szilagyi, 9, of Amherst, said the class was a good one.

“I took the class because I love smoothies,” she said. “I like to eat, so I want to learn how to cook. She (Goodman) is a good teacher.”
