One person can make a difference

Lorain residents have grit, resilience, pride and hope. Lorain is you. Lorain is me.

People and our experiences are what truly connects this city. Family, friends, acquaintances, even strangers...we have a common bond. Oftentimes, when one rejoices, we all rejoice. When one hurts, we all hurt.

Over the years, I’ve watched the Lorain community grow and change. Good things have happened, but difficult things have happened, too. Industries have moved out and a number of families have followed suit. In some cases, residents have had to make tough decisions between paying rent and buying medication or food. It’s a dilemma that affects the entire family, but especially our children. If they are hungry, their ability to focus and concentrate in school and ultimately to receive a good education, can suffer.

According to the national nonprofit organization Feeding America, one in five kids in our region may not know where they will get their next meal. That’s one too many.

But one is all that’s needed to make a difference, too.

One person who is ready to stand up, in a big or small way, is all that it takes to begin to influence change. I host the weekly community affairs show “We the People” on WKYC Channel 3 where we encourage our viewers to learn about the issues facing our community and to give back.

This September, I will be a part of the Child Hunger Summit convened by Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio.

The purpose is to drive awareness of child hunger, develop strategies to address the need and empower participants to act. I encourage you to take time to better understand the problem of childhood hunger in our community and to get involved. Raise awareness. Donate food. Volunteer your time and talents. We’re better together. Let’s help our city and its amazing people to thrive!
