Comets strong on both sides of ball in win
Amherst might have rolled past visiting Firelands, 41-0, on Sept. 6 but Coach Mike Passerrello said there’s still room for improvement.
It was a pretty sloppy overall game from both sides, but for the Comets it was enough AMHERST 41, FIRELANDS 0 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Penalties. Fumbles. Interceptions. That is how it was for both sides.
The Comets used an INT to jump start their scoring. Later on their drive, Ashland went for it on fourth and 13, and on that play the Comets struck first with a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it, 7-0.
Later on in the quarter, the Falcons were picked off again, this time by defensive back Kyle Ferguson.
The Comets capitalized on the interception by Ferguson, which led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Torre Weatherspoon to make it 14-0.
Despite the two touchdowns for Amherst in the first half, it had in 35 yards in penalties.
“We keep telling the guys as we move forward, the execution, we hurt ourselves,” said Passerrello.
“What’s stopping us is our own selves, and we talked about that in the second half, and I think you saw a cleaner game in the second half.”
The Comets during the second scored two more times, once in the third and once in the fourth quarter.
One of the keys to the game for the Comets was their running game. It was led by Weatherspoon, who finished with 126 rushing yards, along with three touchdowns.
“It’s great for Torre,” said Passerrello. “It’s his first varsity start as a sophomore. Jonathan West went down with an injury last week. Torre did a great job of stepping up, he’s going to continue to get better as a sophomore.”
Weatherspoon added: “We’ve been working hard all week. The line did a great job. And then I was just able to find the holes. And we were able to get that dub.”
Quarterback Tyler Brezina was 15 of 27 passing for 176 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Despite the blowout loss, Firelands head coach Ryan O’Rourke believes there are some positives that came from this game.
“I think some kids made some plays,” O’Rourke said. “I think some kids stood up to the moment, but like I said, we’re going to have to make some corrections, and get kids I guess better prepared.”
