Midview at Amherst postponed
The game between the Midview Middies (2-0, 1-0 SWC) and the Amherst Comets (2- 0, 1- 0 SWC) has been postponed to 4 p.m., Sept. 14 at Amherst. The teams will resume play with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter. The score was tied at zero. Midview will have the ball and start on second down.
Amherst, however was able to get a six-play drive in before punting the ball over to Midview.
The Comets were able to get runs from senior wide receiver and defensive back Kyle Ferguson, and sophomore running back and defensive back Torre Weatherspoon.
Junior quarter back and defensive back Tyler Brezina also threw a 10yardpass to juniorwide receiver and defensive back Ty Weatherspoon.
The Comets were able to get a first down during the drive.
Amherst punted from its own 42, to Midview’s 16. The Middies got one play in, and it resulted in an incomplete pass.
The lightning started just before kickoff behind the stadium, and behind the Middies bench.
The teams played through that, but once the first sound of thunder hit, that was when the game went into an hour-plus delay.
It wasn’t until 8:16 p.m. the official announcement came to postpone the game.
With decisions like these, it is a joint agreement between both teams, and officials to decide what the next process would be.
“By the time we got warmed up and out there, wemight be out there for another two minutes and be doing it all night. So, it looked like storms were going to be here till midnight.” —Midview coach DJ Shaw
With thunderstorms expected to continue throughout the night Sept. 13, Midview head coach DJ Shaw said if the teams went through the process of trying to play again, they would not get much of the game in.
This is why the decision was made to postpone to the next day.
“There’s another line of storms coming right behind it,” Shaw said. “And we felt like by the time we got out there...
because it’s still lightning right now. By the time we got warmed up and out there, we might be out there for another two minutes and be doing it all night. So, it looked like storms were going to be here till midnight. It’s not good to just keep coming in and out. So better just to play tomorrow.”
Amherst head coach Mike Passerrello echoed the same sentiments as Coach Shaw.
With the game now on Sept. 14, all Coach Passerrello wants his team to do is to stay focused, and just play football.
