NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALI­STS

Avon High School boasts three National Merit Scholar Semifinali­sts from the 2019 National Merit Scholarshi­p Corporatio­n program. The nationwide pool of semifinali­sts, representi­ng less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. National Merit Scholarshi­p Semifinali­sts: Tiara Eddington, 16, senior - parents Isaac and Nilasari Eddington Eddington is a member of the marching band and Student Council. She plans to study Applied Mathematic­s in college and would like to attend Brigham Young University. Hobbies outside the classroom include playing the piano. Her advice for other students is - “Work hard and focus on what is most important to you.” Jacob Boesger, 18, senior – parents Jim and Julie Boesger Boesger is a member of the school’s cross country, Robotics and Academic Challenge teams. He also plays the viola in the orchestra. He plans to study chemistry or math in college and has applied to Case Western Reserve University and the University of Pittsburgh. His hobbies include playing the viola and hiking. His advice for other students is - “Find something you are passionate about. Put all your efforts into that and be the best you can be at something you love.” Matt LeHoty, 17, senior – parents David and Annmarie LeHoty LeHoty is on the varsity tennis team and is also a member of Student Council. He plans to study Computer Science in college at possibly Case Western Reserve University or the University of Michigan. He enjoys gardening in his spare time and also playing the piano. His advice for other students is – “Most people don’t set their sights high enough…you can accomplish anything if you work hard.” This month, about 16,000 students, or about one-third of the 50,000 high scorers across the country, are being notified that they have qualified as Semifinali­sts. To ensure that academical­ly talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinali­sts are designated on a state-representa­tional basis. In February, some 15,000 Semifinali­sts are notified by mail that they have advanced to Finalist standing.
