In response to the devastating earthquakes ravaging the island of Puerto Rico, the Latin American Motorcycle Association in collaboration with Lorain 6th Ward Councilman Rey Carrion, are spearheading a collection relief drive to assist individuals and families in desperate need.

A news conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Jan. 18, at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave. in

Lorain.

Founded in 1977 in Chicago, the Latin American Motorcycle Association is an international organization that is recognized as one of the most active long-distance riding clubs in the world, according to a news release.

Latin American Motorcycle Association affiliates in Puerto Rico are assisting in the relief effort, the release said.

This relationship assures that all deliveries sent from Lorain will reach their intended destinations in Puerto Rico.

BeeGee Toro, president of the Latin American Motorcycle Association, reached out to its chapters in Puerto Rico, and members there will receive the shipments and distribute them to those in need, according to the release.

Supplies needed are small flashlights, alcohol pads, band aids, gauze, duct tape, small radios, first aid kits, batteries and whistles.

A phone call to the group in Puerto Rico will be made during this gathering.

Delta Airlines has partnered with the local team to deliver supplies to Puerto Rico at a very reduced rate, according to the release.

Susan Santos, member of Delta’s team with roots in Lorain, will fly in from Atlanta to provide a logistical report during the news conference, the release said.

Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley, who is expected to attend the conference, instructed city staffers Jan. 14 to fly the Puerto Rican flag at Lorain City Hall as a sign of solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and its large population in Lorain.

“My family and I support the efforts of (the Latin American Motorcycle Association) and Rey Carrion with this humanitarian effort,” Bradley said. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and all those who help in this relief drive.”

In addition to first aid supplies, the local group seeks to raise $10,000 to help stimulate the Puerto Rico’s economy.

A special account was created by the Latin American Motorcycle Association which allows donations to be 100% tax deductible.
