Sheffield Village City Council swears in new member

- By Lyric Aquino laquino@morningjournal.com

Sheffield Village Council selected Robert Yarber as its newest member Jan. 13.

Yarber’s term will last until Dec. 31, 2021.

He is filling the vacancy for Councilman Bob Markovich, who now is Council pro tem.

Markovich replaced Pro Tem Carolyn White, who decided against running for reelection in order to compete against Mayor John Hunter.

“Carolyn had the choice of running for council or for mayor but she couldn’t run for both,” Hunter said. “Markovich resigned from his position which would have ended on Dec. 31, 2021, and ran for Carolyn White’s vacant seat which will end later.”

Hunter said the village put out a notice for citizens to send in their resumes for a chance to sit on Council.

“We needed someone to fill the position,” he said. “We sent out a notice in December, and all resumes had to be in to me by Jan. 3.”

After sending in their resumes, candidates were interviewed by Hunter.

Six candidates were at the meeting Jan. 13 to present a speech three to five minutes in length to Council followed by a question and answer session. “I’ve worked with all of them [the candidates] on projects,” Hunter said. “I’ve known some of them for 10 years, some for 50 and some for shorter than that.

“And I know they could all do they job.”

Out of the six contestants, the Council nominated three of them for the final vote.

Yarber won with three of five votes.

“I think he’ll be a great addition and add another perspective to Council,” Hunter said. “We have a wide variety of people and perspectives on Council and he’s going to do well.”
