Summit Academy celebrates National School Choice Week with activities, extended plans
Summit Academy School - Lorain staff and students are showing their pride during a weeklong celebration from Jan. 27-31.
The school, located at 346 Illinois Ave., is celebrating National School Choice Week.
“They have the option to choose to come to school here, so each day is basically a different celebration,” said Melissa Cicerchi, lead intervention specialist at Summit Academy. “Today, the students are wearing yellow; the class that has the most yellow will win a prize.
“Tomorrow, we will be wearing scarfs. Wednesday, the students will create banners, we judge them and then they are posted to the website (www.schoolchoiceweek.com/celebrate),” Cicerchi said.
“It’s a time to draw attention to the fact that your family chose this school.”

“Students will be writing ‘Thank-You’ notes on Thursday,” Cicerchi said, “and then on Friday, they will create either a rap, song, dance or poem and the winner will be posted to the website.”
Lori Davis, an instructional coach at Summit Academy, said the week is for alternative choice schools.
“The week is for schools, whether it’s parochial, charter or otherwise,” Davis said. “It’s a time to draw attention to the fact that your family chose this school.
“Your family worked with our charter school to find a place you fit, maybe better than the school where you
are supposed to be going to.”
Summit Academy offers a unique learning experience, Davis said.
“Our school focuses on working with students with ADHD and autism,” she said. “Seventy-four percent of our students right now have an IEP (Individualized Education Program) to provide for special needs.”
