UAW Local 2000 holds lunch at senior center
The UAW Local 2000 came together to help out the Lorain Community Senior Center by giving them a special luncheon for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 16.
“This was something UAW wanted to do for us for Valentine’s Day, and we really appreciate the fact they were willing to put on this lunch,” said J.R. Lee, board president for the Lorain Community Senior Center, at 3361 Garfield Blvd. “They are also doing something for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.”
Lee said he is thankful the UAW has chosen to help out with events for the Senior Center.
“This is what they wanted to do,” said Lee talking about UAW. “They could have picked any place to help, but they chose the Lorain Community Senior Center.”
Lee was also happy with the ability to hold the luncheon in the Senior Center’s bingo hall.
“This space used to be only used for bingo nights and men’s fellowship,” he said. “We need to start utilizing the space more. If we were in the gym (at the Senior Center), we would be packed. Through grant funding, we want to improve the space and hold more events in here.”
Lee said he wants to continue to let folks in the area know that the center is available.
“It’s kind of secluded here on the east side (of Lorain), and with not too much going on but we want to change that,” he said. “With help from groups like the UAW and the folks who help out from the Eastside Block
Watch. If we don’t work together, we won’t bring the community together.”
Joseph Gee, recording secretary for UAW Local 2000 retirees said the group is glad to help out the seniors.
“We just want to do all we can to help out the seniors,” he said. “We’re happy to support the center.” Pedro Natal, UAW Local 2000 Leadec chairman, said the group will be back at the center for future events.
“We will be back for March 15 with a St. Patrick’s Day dinner,” he said. “We just like to provide community service whenever we can.”
