City approves phase 2 of road construction

Work costs about $917K for over 1 mile

Vermilion City Council gave the green light for the administration to enter into a contract with Precision Paving Inc., of Milan, for phase two of a Vermilion Road project to be completed this summer.

The ordinance for the project was passed under suspension of rules by council due to the Ohio Department of Transportation needing passage before awarding the contract.

City engineer Chris Howard said the city also is looking to apply for more safety funding or grants for installing more guard rails along Vermilion Road.

The project, costing over $917,000, will span over a mile from Brownhelm Station Road south to Jerusalem Road.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization will fund about $600,000 of the project.

With only about $300,000 to be paid by the city, Ward 3 Councilman Steve Holovacs said the Vermilion is lucky to pay that much out of pocket.

“I think that’s a great win for the city to get a section of street like that taken care of and get it back to where it should be,” Holovacs said during the Council meeting.

Ward 2 Councilman Frank Loucka said repaving the road is needed.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Loucka said. “It’s going to be a great benefit to residents and visitors coming into the city.”

Phase two will pick up where phase one left off last year, which was paved from Liberty Avenue to Brownhelm Station Road.
