Boys & Girls Clubs chooses Youth of the Year

- Staff report Local winners have the chance to advance to state, regional and national competitio­ns.

Mikayla Mitchell, an Avon Lake High School graduate who aspires to have a career in forensic psychology, is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County’s 2020 Youth of the Year.

Mikayla, 17, who lives in Lorain, has been involved with the Clubs for three years, two years as a member and one year on the staff, according to a news release.

Her passions are helping youth develop character and leadership skills, watching youngsters grow and instilling values, the release said.

Mikayla’s club lessons include journaling as well as teaching children ways to express emotions and handle tough situations, according to the release.

She moves on to regional Youth of the Year competitio­n.

“Mikayla is a hard-working and passionate young lady who has a huge heart for the children she serves,” said Angelicia Brewer, site director for the Club at Avon Lake’s Westview Elementary School. “She goes above and beyond to make them feel loved.”

A January high school graduate, Mikayla just started classes at Lorain County Community College, according to the release.

Mikayla enjoys drawing, hand lettering with motivation­al artwork, singing and playing the piano.

She also likes running and has been involved in the sports and recreation programs at the club, the release said.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County is a branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast

Ohio, the organizati­on created in 2019 by the merger of Clubs in Akron, Cleveland, Lorain County and Sandusky.

The regional Youth of the Year competitio­n will involve teens from those regions, with the winner announced March 25, according to the release.
