Toni Morrison essay winners announced
The Community Foundation of Lorain County announced the winners of the Toni Morrison Essay Contest.
The Community Foundation of Lorain County announced March 5 the winners of the Toni Morrison Essay Contest.
Celebrating the inaugural year of Toni Morrison Day in the city of Lorain, community members wanted to offer the younger generation a connection to the late author, according to a news release.
Students were posed with the question: How will I define myself?
The winning students each received $75 and one of Morrison’s books. The 2020 winners are:
• Peyton Haney, of Lorain, Toni Morrison Elementary
• Sariah Frost, of Lorain, Toni Morrison Elementary
• Owen Jackson, of Oberlin, Eastwood Elementary in Oberlin
• Addesyn Nazario, of Lorain, General Johnnie Wilson Middle School
• Houston Jordan, of Lorain, General Johnnie Wilson Middle School
• Kendal Bott, of Lorain, of Amherst, Amherst Junior High School
• Hannah Banks, of Lorain, Marion L. Steele in Amherst
• Asher Cipinko, of Oberlin, Oberlin High School
• Sereena Sperry,of Lorain, Lake Ridge Academy
• Iesha-LaShay Phillips, of Oberlin, Oberlin College
• Kayla Young, of Elyria, University of Mount Union
• Megan Grantham, of Vermilion, John Carroll University
The Community Foundation of Lorain County, Lorain Historical Society, Lorain Public Library System, Lorain County Urban League, Lorain County Alliance of Black Educators, Lorain County Chapter of National Council of Negro Women, YWCA and Oberlin College are a part of paying tribute to the Toni Morrison Planning Committee, which helped organize Toni Morrison Day and the essay contest, according to the release.
Essays will be displayed in the Toni Morrison Reading Room at the Lorain Public Library System Main Branch, 351 W. Sixth St. in downtown Lorain.
