Player of the year contenders in focus

Adam Schabel has an update on semifinali­sts for The Morning Journal’s boys basketball player of the year watch list amid regional week and with a strong field of candidates for this season’s honor.

From now through the end of the season, The Morning Journal will run a list of semifinali­sts for the high school boys basketball player of the year award.

This year’s player of the year will be announced after the completion of the boys and girls state tournament­s. Details will be released at a later date. Here is this week’s watch list, in alphabetic­al order. This list is subject to change weekly.

Trajen Chambers, Oberlin: Scored 10points in a sectional final loss to Elyria Catholic. For the season, the junior guard averaged 12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. He also made 35 3-pointers and was a thirdteam all-district selection.

Gavin Dobbins, Open Door: The junior guard averaged 22.6points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.8assists and 2.7 steals per game. He also made 223-pointers and was a firstteam all-district selection.

Justin Garcia, Westlake: The junior forward averaged 17 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1steals per game. He also made 40 3-pointers. Giles Harrell Jr., Oberlin: Scored 15 points in a sectional final loss to Elyria Catholic. For the season, the senior guard averaged 13.2points, 6.1rebounds, 3.3assists, 2.9 steals and 1 block per game. He also made 35 3-pointers and was a second team all-district selection.

Luke Howes, Fairview: Fairview’s all-time leading scorer scored 36points and grabbed nine rebounds in a district semifinal loss to Warrensvil­le

Heights. For the season, the senior guard averaged 23.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5steals per game. He also made 36 3-pointers. Howes is headed to Walsh University and was named the D-III Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year.

Jonny Manning, Midview: The senior forward averaged 18.2points, 11.6rebounds, 3.2assists and 2.5blocks per game. He also surpassed 1,000 career points as a Middie and was named the MVP of the Southweste­rn Conference. He was a first-team all-district selection.

Christian Pfeiffer, Amherst: The senior forward averaged 14.2points, 9.3rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. He also made 18 3-pointers. Ashton Price, Bay: The junior guard averaged 24.2points and 3.7assists per game. He also made 26 3-pointers and set a pair of school records this year. Price scored 47points in a game and had the highest regular season points per game average in a season with 24.2. He was a second-team alldistric­t selection.

Seth Wilson, Lorain: Scored 22points, grabbed six rebounds and made four 3-pointers in a district final win over Lakewood. For the season, the junior guard averaged 13points, 6.8rebounds and 2.3steals per game. He also made 19 3-pointers.

Edward Wright, Elyria Catholic: Scored 30 points and grabbed 10rebounds in a district final loss to Warrensvil­le Heights. For the season, the senior guard averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4steals per game. He also made 46 3-pointers and was a first-team all-district selection. Wright scored over 1,000 career points as a Panther.
