Polling WHERE TO VOTE

-

The change is needed for people to avoid going into nursing homes or residences where a large number of older people could be compromised by exposure to coronavirus, Jacobcik said.

That involves seven spots in Lorain County and up to 11,872 voters, the board of elections members said.

Workers and voting machines will move from the closed polling places into other polling places that already are serving other precincts.

The election staff recommended the precincts move to other, neighboring large polling locations, said board Director Paul Adams.

Inside, the workers and machines for the various precincts will be separated in hopes of avoiding confusion on Election Day.

For example, Amherst Precincts 2-A, 2-C and 3-C, totaling 2,814 voters, were to vote at the 1907 at Central School, 474 Church St.

Instead, those precincts will move so voters can cast ballots at Amherst Marion L. Steele High School, 450 Washington St.

Steele High will accommodate voters in Amherst Precincts 4-A, 4-B and will be joined by voters for Precincts 2-A, 2-C and 3-C.

The full list will be posted on the board website, its voter lookup online search function and on Facebook, Adams said.

The board also will mail 11,872 notices to the affected voters to notify them of the change, he said.

In an unusual turn, Jacobcik and Smith met in the office of elections board Deputy Director James Kramer.

Adams attended with Tom Kelley, director of the Lorain County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and local reporters.

Hurst was present at the board office, 1985 North Ridge Road East in Sheffield Township, but communicated by telephone because she was not feeling well.

She sat in her car parked with her son, Jim Hurst.

Her fellow board members moved from the office to the parking lot for their formal vote.

After the 3-0 decision, Hurst said she was feeling effects of COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which unfortunately afflicts hundreds of thousands of seniors.

When she could not easily get into the office, Hurst said she called in and
