Two area basketball players are taking home a pair of coveted awards.

March 17, Midview’s Jonny Manning was named Lorain County Mr. Basketball, while Elyria Catholic’s Ally Winnen was named Lorain County Miss Basketball.

The two seniors helped led their respective teams to new heights during the 2019-20 season.

Manning led Midview to a 19-4 overall record, coupled with a 16-2 conference record, which helped the Middies win an outright Southwestern Conference Championship. He helped his team advance to a sectional final.

The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 18.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 blocks per game in 2020. Manning was named a firstteam Morning Journal allstar, Southwestern Conference MVP and D-I Lorain County Player of the Year. The senior was also selected to the SWC first team as well as the Northeast Lakes District first team.

Manning, a Lake Erie College commit, is the second Middie to take home the award since it was established in 1975. Anthony Stacey won the award in 1995. Manning is a 1,000 career point scorer and ranks third in Midview boys basketball history with 1,097 career points and is second with 746 rebounds.

Winnen led Elyria Catholic to a 26-1 record and a state final four berth. The Panthers are waiting to see when or if their season will resume following the suspension of the winter tournaments and spring sports by the Ohio High School

Athletic Association as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Winnen was named The Morning Journal girls basketball player of the year as she averaged 17.4 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. Winnen is headed to Saginaw Valley State to continue her basketball career.

The awards were scheduled to be announced at the Lorain County boys and girls basketball all-star games. Those games were canceled, however, due to the precautions being taken in regard to novel coronavirus.

The committee said they are working on a way to get the plaques to Manning and Winnen in the near future.
