Pair face felony charges after alleged domestic dispute

- Staff report

A Vermilion couple is facing felony charges for allegedly driving while intoxicated, one stabbing the other with a knife and the other driving a car into a neighbor’s house March 19.

Matthew S. Schwarz, 31, was charged with vandalism, a fourth-degree felony, leaving the scene, operating a vehicle intoxicated and driving under suspension, all first-degree misdemeanors, resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor, and improper backing, a minor misdemeanor, according to a Vermilion police report.

Tabitha N. Bozman, 31, was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, domestic violence and operating a vehicle intoxicated, both first-degree misdemeanors.

At 2:42 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Cummings Road where a Cadillac DeVille hit a house.

A woman, who lives in the house, said she was sitting on her couch when she heard a loud bang coming from the front of her residence.

She went to the area and noticed that her wall was broken, and she could see the wall stud.

The woman looked out her window and saw tire tracks in her yard and the Cadillac speeding away.

A neighbor said she saw Schwarz operating the vehicle at the time it struck the house, the report said.

The neighbor saw Bozman speeding down the street before coming back to her and Schwarz’s house and allowed Schwarz to enter the Cadillac in the driver seat.

Schwarz got into the car and proceeded to back straight across the road and hit the house.

After hitting the house, the neighbor saw Schwarz return to his house where Bozman re-entered the Cadillac and backed out of the driveway traveling south.

Officers attempted to arrest Schwarz, but he fled and knocked an officer backward, the report said.

After a few minutes of Schwarz pulling away from officers, three officers were able to arrest him.

One of the officers suffered several scratches to the left side of his face near the eye and temple due to the struggle.

Schwarz said Bozman, after the two got into an argument over missing pills from her pill bottle, attacked him with a kitchen knife, the report said.

The right side of his face had a red mark and swelling and he had multiple cut marks on his hands and arms.

When police were talking to neighbors, Bozman drove back to the area and yelled at police; she was ordered out of the car and arrested.

The couple’s children were given to their grandmother for the time being.

Schwarz and Bozman were taken to Lorain County Jail and will be held until their 9 a.m., March 24, appearance at Vermilion Municipal Court.
