Mayor says 4 confirmed cases in city, township
Over the last two days, the city of Amherst has confirmed four positive cases of novel coronavirus in the area.
Over the last two days as of March 26, the city of Amherst has confirmed four positive cases of novel coronavirus in the area.
Mayor Mark Costilow said he believes these cases were spread throughout the city and Amherst Township, as cases are verified through zip code.
Costilow said the Lorain County Public Health worked on the cases and found few other people that the confirmed cases have come in contact with.
“The very few contacts that they’ve discovered have been notified,” he said.
Of those four cases, Costilow said he knows one is hospitalized but not in critical condition, with another quarantined at home.
Residents should err on the side of caution and assume that there are people in their community and neighborhood that have COVID-19, he said.
Before the city and township had confirmed cases, Costilow said the city was taking precautions as if “it was everywhere.
“I’m not saying it is, but you should treat it as if it is,” he said. “That’s what will keep you and your family safe.”
Costilow said he also is aware of a few situations of residents who were tested and results come back as negative.
While it’s the city’s job to keep essential services running, he said he’s leaving it to the county’s health department to trace cases.
“We’re letting the experts come out and trace it and track it,” Costilow said.
