Lorain police said a 23-year-old man is in custody following the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman.

Austin K. Altomare, of Lorain, was charged with murder, according to records from Lorain Municipal Court and the Lorain County Jail.

Defense attorney Anthony Nici entered an innocent plea for Altomare during a video arraignment March 27 at Lorain Municipal Court, said City Prosecutor Mallory Santiago.

Judge Thomas J. Elwell

Jr. set bond at $1 million and scheduled a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m., March 30, Santiago said.

At 11:44 p.m., March 26, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of East 29th Street for a possible fight with gunshots, according to a news release from the Lorain Police Department.

An officer was close to the area and also heard the gunshots.

The caller reported hearing several shots and believed they came from an upstairs apartment, according to the release.

The initial responding officer found the man standing near the address with his hands in the air and an unloaded gun on the ground.

The man stated that he shot his girlfriend, the release said.

Other officers checked the apartment and found the woman unresponsive and suffering from a possible gunshot wound.

Paramedics transported her to Mercy Health Lorain Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.
