Race for the Place will be virtual event
The Gathering Place changes plans for annual fundraiser for cancer services
The Gathering Place celebrates a 20th Anniversary Race for the Place with a virtual event.
The Gathering Place is celebrating its 20th Anniversary Race for the Place with a virtual race, May 29 to June 7.
Presented by University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, participants are encouraged to walk or run their miles throughout the week and then participate in a special Cancer Survivors Day and race ceremony from Facebook or Instagram, according to a news release.
The Race for the Place helps fund the free services offered at The Gathering Place.
“As we contend with the challenge of COVID-19, we recognize that cancer does not stop and neither do the needs of our participants that are coping with the impact of their own or a loved one’s diagnosis,” CEO Michele Seyranian said in the release. “The ability for The Gathering Place to continue providing free programs and services that help individuals and families cope with cancer emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially is as important now as it has ever been.”
Since the novel coronavirus prompted the need to stop in-person programming the organization has been providing virtual programs via Facebook Live, GoTo Meeting, and Zoom, including support groups, programming for children and teens, handson cooking classes, exercise

• 5K — $25 for those ages 16 and older or $18 for those ages 6 to 15.
• 1 Mile — $20 for those ages 16 and older or $15 for those ages 6 to 15. classes, and lectures and workshops.
The annual event has raised nearly $3 million since its inception,t he release stated.
A National Cancer Survivors Day and special 20th anniversary race ceremony will be held beginning at 9 a.m. on Facebook and Instagram.
