LCCC University Partnership work leads to NASA job
A Lorain County Community College University Partnership student has landed a job at NASA’s Plum Brook Station in Sandusky.
This summer Alexis McGillivray, 23, will earn a bachelor of science in computer science and engineering from the University of Toledo through LCCC’s University Partnership.
McGillivray, who grew up in Medina and later moved to Elyria, said she really has liked her time at LCCC.
“I specifically liked the small class sizes,” she said. “It allowed me to get pretty close with classmates and professors.
“Everyone knows your name. It’s a great atmosphere, which is a pro for me.”
McGillivray said the community atmosphere also aided her in making a very personal decision.
“I dealt with coming out during my college years, which led to some difficult and beautiful moments,” she said. “The other pro is the drop in price.
“It’s the exact same degree as a four-year college, but for a much more affordable price. I do feel I got the same education as
I would have had I went to a typical four-year. Honestly, I think I like it better than I would have a fouryear institution.”
McGillivray said she has a real passion for engineering.
“My grandpa was an engineer,” she said. “He was a mechanical and electrical engineer, and I wired a whole scout cabin on his property.
“So, he was an early inspiration for me. I knew this NASA opportunity (was possible) when I scouted the program and knew there was an internship opportunity with them.
“When I started in the program, I applied for everything that I qualified for. That is when I got the opportunity for NASA, and now they will be hiring me full time.”
McGillivray said her time at NASA has been interesting.
“I’ve learned a lot about open-source software,” she said. “It’s just been an opportunity to learn.
“I’ve enjoyed being an engineer; it’s a pretty good gig. I plan on staying with NASA long term.
“I actually switched my major twice during my time at LCCC. And through the programs I took and the professors I spoke with, I landed at the point I am now.”
