The Lorain County Fair will go forward as planned this year, despite the novel coronavirus concerns.

Elected officials in the southern part of the county have given their thoughts on the fair board’s decision.

The Lorain County Fair Board decided June 11 the annual event would take place. It is scheduled for Aug. 23-30 at 23000 Fairgrounds Road in Wellington.

“I think it’s an OK decision, and it’s really a personal choice for each attendee at the fair,” said Mark McConnell, trustee for Pittsfield Township.

“It’s what each person feels is good for them.

“A lot of folks use the fair as a big yearly form of entertainment for them. So, it’s good that it is continuing for the folks that circle it on the calendar.”

McConnell said he really is happy for the youngsters involved with the fair.

“It’s really good for the 4-H kids,” he said. “They started all of their projects, and they have been working really hard.

“So, it would be tough for them if they couldn’t go and show off all the hard work they’ve done.”

McConnell said he likes the fact that the event still will happen despite the pandemic.

“It’s kind of a start of a return to normalcy,” he said. “I think we all would like to see a return to normalcy as soon as safely possible.”

Duane Johnson, a trustee in Penfield Township, said having the fair makes sense when considering everything else that is opening.

“I don’t think it could be any worse than going to Cedar Point or some other places that are reopening,” Johnson said. “I think it’s good that we are starting to get back to normal.

“It is really up to folks to stay safe and keep the safe distances during this.”

Gene Hartman, council president in Wellington, said the fair is something very special for people in the Wellington community.

“As a longtime Wellington resident, I know how the county fair holds a special place in a lot of people’s hearts here,” Hartman said. “I’m also aware of the risks with COVID-19, but I trust the judgment of the fair board.

“I know the people on the board, and I know they will make sure everything will be done safely. It all depends on each person, and whether they want to attend.”
