Rotary taking Pizza Challenge to the road

- Staff report

Elyria Sunrise Rotary will host its 20th annual Pizza Challenge, with this year being a little different.

The challenge will be on the road June 14.

“This year, we were unsure if our annual event would be possible due to the pandemic, but in Rotarians fashion, we came up with a creative solution.” said Club President Sam Speck.

“We hope that this will give families in Elyria and around the county something enjoyable to do as they travel around the city and try out some of the best pizza around.”

For the event, nine pizza shops, including Cozzeria’s, Sambino’s, Angelina’s, Foundry Kitchen & Bar, Marco’s, Pizza Hut, Valley of the Eagles, Lorain County Community College and Papa John’s will open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“When you pull up to the pizza shop, you’ll show them your tickets and you’ll get a box of samples of pizza,” Speck said.

After you’ve finished your tour, we want you to go on our website elyriasunriserotary.com and vote for your favorite pizza.”

The pizza place with the most votes will win a trophy, which Elyria Sunrise Rotary gives out every year.

The annual Pizza Challenge is sponsored by local businesses as well as the city of Elyria and the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce with U.S. Bank being the title sponsor, the release said.

“U.S. Bank is proud to be the title sponsor of this event, because we believe in the work of Rotary and are excited to know that the proceeds will go toward addressing hunger and helping small businesses in Elyria,” said Maggie Rivera-Tuma, business banking development consultant from U.S. Bank. “During these challenging times, families are looking for something fun to do, and I’m excited that our sponsorship will allow this event to be affordable to the average family in our community.”

Tickets can be purchased in person between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Nick Abraham Auto Mall, 1111 E. Broad St. in Elyria, or online at www.elyriasunriserotary.com.
