Elyria man arrested after low-speed chase

- Staff report

An Elyria man is facing felony charges after allegedly leading police on a chase while drunk June 14.

Donahue Oliver, 29, was charged with failure to comply, a third-degree felony, obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony, driving intoxicated and refusing to be tested for intoxication, both firstdegree misdemeanors, and resisting arrest, a seconddegree misdemeanor, according to an Elyria police report.

At 8:45 p.m., officers were in the 800 block of Garden Street when they saw a black Cadillac, driven by Oliver, come to a sudden stop, and then back up and move forward several times before ultimately striking a rock, the report said.

Oliver then drove the Cadillac around where the officers were parked and rolled down his window.

Officers could see he looked like he was going to pass out, the report said.

Oliver lifted his head up and then started to drive away from police.

A chase ensued with Oliver driving only 5 to 10 mph

He went from Garden Street to Woodford Avenue and then proceeded to West River Road.

The car continued to the intersection of Lake Avenue and Furnace Street where a Lorain police officer, who had joined in to help Elyria police, deployed stop sticks on the road.

The attempt failed and Oliver continued his slow speed chase, according to the report.

Oliver went onto state Route 57 and was driving in the same lane as oncoming traffic as he headed toward Sheffield Township, the report said.

Lorain police successfully deployed stop sticks when the vehicle reached Route 57 and Mayfield Street, flattening the Cadillac’s tires.

Oliver, with stop sticks attached to the bottom of the vehicle, continued to drive until he reached Tacoma Street where he stopped.

Officers took Oliver, whom they suspected was intoxicated, back to the Elyria Police Department where he told officers he was wearing an ankle monitor due to a pending felony intoxicated driving case.

Oliver is in the Lorain County Jail on a $62,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m., June 22, before Elyria Municipal Court Judge Robert C. White.
