Self-response rates for census still climbing

- Staff report

Lorain County’s self-response rate for the 2020 census has continued to climb, contending with 2010 numbers.

As of June 18, Lorain County is at 71.1 percent for the self-response rate, according to Lorain County census partnership specialist Richard Romero.

At the end of the self response period during the 2010 census, the county finished with a 72.1 percent self response rate, Romero said.

“I can say with much pride that we are not only going to beat 2010, we are going to make history if we keep this pace of engaging all of are communities,” he said.

With an accurate response rate, Lorain County will be directed more federal funds for a variety of public services, including the following:

• Hospitals, health clinics and health care services

• Emergency and disaster response, fire and public safety services

• Schools, education programs and grants

• Roads, bridges and other public transit and infrastructure projects

• Businesses and economic development

• Housing services and programs for special populations

• Family and social services

• Water and waste management

The census still is searching for part-time workers as well to bring in an even higher response rate.

Full-time and part-time jobs are available, with part-time positions clocking in between 20 and 30 hours a week.

Hourly pay rates range from $17 and $18.50, with census taker and field supervisor positions available.
